Policy on Long-term Archiving and Digital Preservation

Nomenclarure

Any material published by Rockefeller Publishing Co., including books, book chapters, monographs, manuscripts, reports, or essays, will be referred to as "Article."

1. Motivation

Bad things can happen, and it is essential to be prepared for them. Unpredictable events, such as the cessation of a company, server outages, cyber attacks, natural disasters, and other disruptions, can lead to the loss of digital content.

To prevent the loss of its published scholarly literature, Rockefeller Publishing Co. has implemented an active plan to ensure the long-term preservation, as explained in this document.

2. Safeguarding digital data

All materials hosted on this website are preserved in three secure and redundant systems to safeguard our digital contents against accidental loss, corruption, or damage. In the event of an unexpected shutdown, our backup systems are designed to restore the website and its functionalities within 24 hours.

3. Compliance with legal and regulatory requirements

Rockefeller Publishing Co. employs industry standards to host and maintain digital contents. Rockefeller has subscriptions to private services that protect the company data against cyber attacks and malware.

4. Long-term preservation of scholarly content

To mitigate the risk of content loss, Rockefeller Publishing Co. follows a robust strategy designed to ensure secure and long-term accessibility.

  • Since each published Article is available for download as a PDF file directly from the company's website, we encourage authors to upload their Articles to preprint platforms and share them within the research community.
  • Rockefeller stores each published Article on the Internet Archive platform. The Internet Archive is Rockefeller's trusted partner, supporting long-term preservation of the scholarly content authored and published under Rockefeller's name.
  • Another copy of each Article is securely preserved on GitHub, a platform provided by GitHub Inc. GitHub offers free hosting for open-source software and open-access materials.
  • GitHub is integrated with Zenodo. As a result, when GitHub receives a file, it sends a copy to Zenodo, and Zenodo saves it in its own server. This ensures that every digital item from Rockefeller is securely stored in both platforms, GitHub and Zenodo.
  • Zenodo is a versatile open-access repository, managed and operated by CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research.
  • Rockefeller is in the process of setting a new agreement with Portico, which will help Rockefeller create another level of safety for the preservation of our digital content. Portico saves offline copies of digital files, and ensures they will remain accessible for the long term. Portico has been certified as a trustworthy digital repository by the Center for Research Libraries.
